They Didn’t Think This Through
Nobody is paying attention here. Not the writers (Moses?) or redactors of this story, and not God.Â
As we continue the flood saga, God is still miserable and regretful. He’s so mad, he’s seeing red and can’t think straight!
How Many Animals, God?
Genesis 7:2â3Â Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female…
We know that God loves the number seven; thatâs not a problem. But just a few verses earlier in Chapter 6âyouâll remember from the last episodeâGod said:Â âYou are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures.â
Now, suddenly, itâs seven of every clean animal and two of every unclean animal. And seven of every kind of bird.
Which one is it? Which one would have literally been on the ark? Would there have been 14 cows and 14 peacocks, or would there be two?
This is a blatant contradiction. For some reason, no one ever mentioned this in Sunday School. If I were a Christian, I guess I’d have to choose to believe that both 14 and two are true? I mean, there were two at least until there were 14, so maybe both can be true if you really massage the numbers.
The more difficult hurdle is the anachronism.Â
a¡nach¡ro¡nism
/ÉËnakrÉËnizÉm/
something belonging or appropriate to a period other than that in which it exists or is portrayed.
“Clean animals” weren’t defined until God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai. Noah would’ve looked at God dumbfounded. Maybe he would’ve hosed down 14 animals and taken 2 which had just been rolling in the mud. Just like the first fruits sacrifice of Cain and Abel seems out of place before the Exodus, in the same way, the clean/unclean categories are premature here.Â
Â
Also, âclean animalsâ? Keep in mind, I donât know where this story is going, but how does Noah know which animals are dirty? The Law of Moses hasnât been written yet. Why bring the unclean ones at all? What was the value of that? Weâre not eating pigs, right? Why do we need them? To find truffles? It seems like they are just there to take up room and leave something dirty to clean up.
The Repetition Rule
Genesis 7:9Â …came to Noah and entered the ark…
Genesis 7:15Â Pairs of all creatures that have breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.
This is like the fourth time weâre hearing this. Itâs repetition. It must be important.
If the Bible repeats âtwo by twoâ four times, thatâs how we know it matters. Which makes me think: if there were something really important for moralityâlike, say, âdonât molest childrenââyouâd think it would be in there 20 times, right? Because if weâre mentioning these animals entering the boat four separate times, surely the really big moral stuff would get even more airtime.
And who went in?
Genesis 7:13Â On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons entered the ark.
You know, this is like when people say, âIâll talk to my lawyer,â and they assume itâs a man. Here, the women are a total afterthought. Noah is there. His sons are there. And then just… âthe wives.â They donât get names. They are just luggage.
This is the rule in Bible, not the exception. Iâll be creating a cheat sheet dedicated to showing that God Hates Women across the board. They are mostly nameless vehicles to produce more âmanâ.
God Repays Violence with… Violence
Genesis 7:21â23Â Every living thing that moved on the earth perishedâbirds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.
Dead. Because they were âviolent.â
I donât know if weâre supposed to be like God, because we havenât read a verse thatâs told us that yet. But what we do know is that God repays violence with incredible violence. I donât know if you think causing a worldwide flood and drowning babies and puppies is violence, but I think it falls under that category.
Everything died. Centipedes. Earwigs. (I wish those two hadnât come back, actually).
Genesis 7:24Â The waters flooded the earth for 150 days.
I always thought it was just 40 days and 40 nights. Thatâs what you learn in the cartoon versions. You think after 40 days the rain stops and itâs over. No. The earth was flooded for 150 days.
Closing Thoughts
Theyâre just hanging out in a boat. The whole world is completely annihilated. Is that God repaying evil with good? Or is it God saying, âYou think youâre violent? Check this out.â
I donât even know if God is âgood,â by the way. It hasnât said here, âGod is good.â It hasnât said âGod is loving.â There is no indication for me right now to think that he is. Weâll see if that even happens.

If I were debating a Christian and this regret stuff wasn’t in the book and I suggested it, they would argue it. because God is omniscient.Â

Welcome back to Joel Reads Bible. Iâm Joel. I read Bible. Iâm reading it from the beginning to the very bitter end, and weâre on chapter 7 of Genesis. Weâre learning about Noah. Itâs exciting so far because Godâs grieved with everyone and heâs ready to kill them, and so heâs like, âNoah, build this ark, please. Get your family and two of all the animals and letâs go. I gotta kill everything else.ââ
Verse 1Â âGenesis 7: The Lord then said to Noah, âGo into the ark, you and your family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.ââ
Verse 2Â ââTake with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate,ââ
Verse 3Â ââand also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the Earth.â
We know that God loves the number seven; thatâs not a problem. But just a few verses earlier in chapter 6âyouâll remember from the last episodeââYou are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird and every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground.â Now all of a sudden: âTake with you seven of every kind of clean animal, male and female.â Only two of every kind of unclean animal, and then seven of every kind of bird, male and femaleâwhich to me sounds like 14.
Which one is it? Like, which one would have literally been on the ark? Would there have been 14 cows, 14 peacocks, or would there be two? I think this is what people run up against when theyâre talking about a literal, infallible word of God. This is a blatant contradiction, and for some reason, no oneâs ever mentioned it to me before that Noahâs ark may have had seven males and seven females of every kind of animal except for the unclean ones. Iâm just going to choose to believe that it is true that there were 14 and two. I mean, there were two at least until there were 14, so I mean, maybe both can be true if you really massage the numbers.
âEvery kind of clean animal.â There are dirty animals. Keep in mind, I donât know where this story is going. Dirty animals? Have you heard of such a thing? Maybe later in the Bible theyâll tell us which animals are dirty. Why bring the unclean ones? What was the value of that? Like, weâre not eating pigs, right? Theyâre unclean. Why do we need pigs? To find the truffles? Why are we bothering with this? Just to take up more room on the ark? Just to have something dirty to clean up after? If you think about it, itâs a bit of a weird one.â
Verse 4Â ââSeven days from now I will send rain on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights, and I will wipe from the face of the Earth every living creature I have made.â
Heâs so mad! Heâs just like, so angry. Heâs just like, âIâlisten, seven days from now, Iâm killing everyone. I amâIâm going to do it.ââ
Verse 5Â âAnd Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.â
Verse 6Â âNoah was 600 years oldâthatâs a lot of work for a guy that ageâwhen the floodwaters came on the earth.â
Verse 7Â âAnd Noah and his sons and his wife and the sonsâ wives…
You know, this is like the equivalent of nowadays when people go, âLetâs call the lawyer and weâll talk to him or her.â It could be her! âNoah was there and his sons and his wife and his sonâs wives.â Women are an afterthought. I mean, they kind of are; they were made out of a rib. âNoah and his sons and his wife and his sonsâ wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.ââ
Verse 8Â âPairs of clean and unclean animals, of birds and all creatures that move along the ground, male and female,â
Verse 9Â âcame to Noahâthey just showed up!âand entered the ark as God had commanded Noah.
So theyâre listening to Godâs commands to Noah? Theyâre like, âWhat? God commanded Noah for us to go there? Letâs go!â Thatâs a miracle. Thatâs a miracle that that would have happened. Thatâs not a normalânone of this is normalâbut thatâs outrageous. Also, keep in mind weâve repeated the âtwo of every kindâ thing. This is like the third time weâre hearing this. Itâs repetition. Itâs important. We must be aware that thatâs how weâve maintained all these animals, I suppose. And I just want you to remember: important things are repeated in the Bible, okay? So we should be able to find things more than once that are really important.
So like, for instance, letâs say the Bible were to say âdonât molest childrenâ or something like that, and Iâm sure itâs in there somewhere. Itâs got to be in there like 20 times, right? Because it would be something that would be, I would think, really, really important to note as far as like what you donât want mankind to do. Because if weâre mentioning these animals like three times at this point, I would say that the important sort of stuff has got to be in there a lot of times, too.â
Verse 10Â âAnd after seven days the floodwaters came on the earth.â
Verse 11Â âIn the 600th year of Noahâs lifeâwe already knowâon the seventeenth day of the second month, on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.â
Verse 12Â âAnd the rain fell on the earth 40 days and 40 nights.
Just bedlam. I mean, it was wet.â
Verse 13Â âOn that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sonsâthis is so important, we keep on having to mention itâentered the ark.â
Verse 14Â âThey had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings.â
Verse 15Â âFourth time: Pairs of all creatures that have breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.â
Verse 16Â âThe animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in.
So the Lord shut the door? Thatâs nice. âCan you get that door, God? Itâs huge.ââ
Verse 17Â âFor 40 days the flood kept coming on the earthâkept coming and coming and coming, it doesnât say thatâfor 40 days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth.â
Verse 18Â âThe waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water.
Thatâs how boats work. They float.â
Verse 19Â âThey rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were coveredâeven Mount Ararat.â
Verse 20Â âThe waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than 20 feet.
Itâs a lot of water.â
Verse 21Â âEvery living thing that moved on the earth perishedâbirds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.
Dead. They were violent. What do we repay violence with? Well, you… I donât know if weâre supposed to be like God, because we havenât read a verse thatâs told us that, but what we do know is that God repays violence with incredible violence. I donât know if you think that causing a worldwide flood is violence, but I think it would fall under that category.â
Verse 22Â âEverything on dry land that has breath of life in its nostrils died.â
Verse 23Â âEvery living thing on the face of the Earth was wiped outâmen and animals and the creatures that move along the groundâcentipedes, for instance, and earwigs.
I wish they never came back! Why didâwhy did Noah put those in the boat? All these gross… but I think they probably are part of like nature in some sort of positive way or whatever. And the birds of the air were wiped off the Earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him on the ark.â
Verse 24Â âThe waters flooded the Earth for 150 days.
For 150 days? I never really think about that. I always go 40 days and 40 nights; thatâs what you learn, and you think that after those 40 days and 40 nights, the floodâs done. No. 150 days.â
Closing Thoughts âTheyâre just hanging out in a boat. Tons of food, tons of animals, maybe an extra animal to eat. But all the people, and their babies, and the unborn babies, and the animals that didnât do anything… all the treesâI mean, youâve seen swamp treesâall the trees are ruined. The whole world is completely annihilated, and thatâs God repaying evil with good, maybe? Or itâs God just being like, âYou think youâre violent? You think you can be violent? Check this out.â
Anyway, God bless the reading of His word, and weâll be back next time with chapter 8. How does Noah get out of this fix? Please subscribe and comment any snarky or positive remarks. Or maybe, look, maybe Iâve said some stupid things. Maybe youâre a Christian or you know this Bible better than I do, because Iâm just reading it as if itâs for the first time. And by the way, Iâm only on chapter 7. Who knows, maybe by 1st Samuel 25 weâll have figured out that God was actually really, really kind in this flood situation. Okay, maybe not kindâbut does God have to be kind? No, he has to be good. And sometimes being good isnât kind. I donât even know if he is good, by the way. It has not said here, âGod sees things and thinks theyâre good.â It has not said that God is good, okay? Thereâs no indication for me right now to think that God is good. And we do not know that God is loving. It has not been said. Weâll see if that even happens, guys. Thanks for watching again, please subscribe, and we will see you next time.â
